    Madison, Wisconsin. October 1912: October 1912. [4] pages. Original printed wrappers. Inscribed on the verso of the front wrapper: 'For Ethel Talbot Scheffauer with greetings of fellowship William Ellery Leonard. This poem was written shortly after the death of Leonard's wife, Charlotte Freeman Leonard, known as Lottie, in 1910. The number of copies printed is likely to have been very small. The poem was first published commercially in Harriet Munroe's Poetry, in October 1913.

They begin: '…Introduction to a volume of political poems printed just before the outbreak of hostilities and of course suppressed. Sometimes I hope to be able to send you a copy (I have the entire edition in me private Ratskeller!). In general I feel that 1918-1920 has proved my case only with too tragic completeness!' The pages are somewhat worn and chipped. This copy came from the library of Ethel Talbot Scheffauer, and it is probably to her, or to…

The pages are somewhat worn and chipped. This copy came from the library of Ethel Talbot Scheffauer, and it is probably to her, or to her husband, the poet, Herman George Scheffauer, that he is addressing his remarks. The Preliminary Note to the book states: 'These pages were in the hands of the printer many weeks ago…. We have severed diplomatic relations and may be at war to-morrow…. Hence I have withdrawn these pages from publication and had a few copies struck off merely as tokens for such personal friends as best know how deeply…. I have suffered in spirit.'
