Inscribed on the verso of the front wrapper: 'For Ethel Talbot Scheffauer with greetings of fellowship William Ellery Leonard. This poem was written shortly after the death of Leonard's wife, Charlotte Freeman Leonard, known as Lottie, in 1910. The number of copies printed is likely to have been very small. The poem was first published commercially in Harriet Munroe's Poetry, in October 1913.
