Original decorative ‘red’cloth, with gilt image of sunflowers and grasses and the word ‘COMPLETE’ at the foot of the spine. First British pirate edition. Published anonymously by Hotten. Name and date on title; inner joints repaired; blank corner missing from pages 287/88; small stain at bottom fore-edge; spine worn at head & heel; stamped on front free endpaper: ‘From a Reader of the Sunday Times'. This, a pirate edition by Hotten, was the only complete edition of Leaves of Grass published in the U.K. in Whitman’s lifetime. The size of the edition is unknown, but copies are quite rare.
