THE FAMILY TESTAMENT AND SCHOLAR’S ASSISTANT: calculated not only to promote the READING of the HOLY SCRIPTURES in FAMILIES and SCHOOLS, but also to remove that great Uneasiness observable in Children upon the appearance of hard Words in their Lessons; the Whole being arranged in the following Manner, viz. I. An introduction to spelling and reading in general, containing a plain account of the sounds of letters and syllables; general rules of spelling; the explanation and use of quantity and accent; with directions for reading with elegance and propriety. II. In order to render this work universally serviceable, there is prefixed an alphabetical table of all the proper names of persons and places, mentioned in the New Testament, with the meaning or signification of each in their original languages. III. Proper names, and other hard words, are collected and ranged in columns of spelling at the head of every chapter, with figures, denoting in what verse each word occurs; all properly divided and accented, which words the scholar should be taught to spell, read, and pronounce, prior to entering upon the succeeding lesson; that part being intended to promote the reading of the Holy Scriptures with ease, elegance, and propriety. IV. To this edition is added, a collection of short explanatory notes, for the use of those who have it not in their power to purchase large expositions. With an introductory preface, by the Reverend Joseph Brown. A New edition.

Spine repaired with an overlay of paper; the chapbook sewn into modern wrappers with a typed title label to the upper panel. Rare. The British Library has what looks to be the same chapbook, but with, ‘Bow-lane’ added to the address, which they date, circa 1750, so it’s possible that the above copy is a little earlier than 1780.

Crossed through ownership name on front endpaper, dated 1796; the occasional mark; else a very good copy. The third and final volume of the first edition of the work was published in 1789, so this abridgement by Richard Johnson, was promptly into print.
