PICTURE ALPHABET.
Circa 1840. No imprint or date, but circa 1840. A turned wooden cylindrical container with a top, bearing a hand-coloured engraved pictorial paper title label showing children being taught the alphabet by their mother. Cylinder height: 85 mm. The cylinder contains 35 card discs, of which 26 bear a wood-engraved letter on one side and a hand-coloured pictorial image on the other illustrating the letter of the alphabet; a further seven cards bear lower case letters on one side, and various alphabets and vowels etc. on the other., and bear numbers and alphabets. Some light marking, soiling and wear; the label has a small piece missing; else a very attractive example, with the cards in good order.
