Original full tree calf, gilt; but with no title label. 12mo. Some off-setting from leather to front endpaper and title - similarly at rear; binding a little worn at head and heel; else a very good copy. Bears the ownership inscription on front fixed endpaper: 'Misses M. & D. Inglis - 23d Novr. 1826.'

Lacks half-title; manuscript name, 'Mercantile Library' at head of title; else a very good copy of a work first published in 1773. George Chapman (1723-1806) was a professional educator. He published a number of other works on education, amongst them 'Hints on the Education of the Lower Ranks of the People' and 'The Appointment of Parochial Schoolmasters'.

First edition. Bookplates of Swansea Training College. Boards worn at corners and edges; else a very good set. Barrow’s preface references the theories of Locke, Rousseau, the Edgeworths, and Knox. There are chapters on the discipline and instruction of infants, the comparative advantages of public and private education, the choice of a school, grammars, the study of the English language, and the art of teaching.

Florence.Domenico Maria Manni. 1739. 5 volumes bound in recent quarter calf gilt with black and red labels. Quarto. All edges red. Blind library of Birbeck College to titles, together with Guildhall Library stamps on titles and occasionally throughout. Little water-staining to title-page of volume 5, and one leaf with an old tape repair to blank lower margin. Contemporary ownership inotes to titles. Else a handsome clean set.

Binding heavily worn; endpapers and title a little creased; however, but for one which has a small mark, the maps are very clean. This work is more commonly found as a quarto, with the maps folded at the centre. This oblong edition is certainly preferable.

Comprising: 40 printed cards, bearing a total of 240 answers, and a small book of rules and corresponding questions; all contained in the original slipcase, with printed label to the upper face. Covers of the book are a little chipped and creased; else a very good complete set. Scarce. Some of the questions and corresponding answers are quite amusing. 'What are the chief articles of commerce from America? Cotton, Furs, Cochineal, Tobacco, Rice, Sugar, and Drugs, &c. For what is Guinea noted? For the sale of slaves.

The half-title bears the ownership inscription of Emma A. G. Davenport. This is probably Emma Anne Georgiana Davenport (1819-1910) who was a British children's novelist. She is best known for her works published in the catalogue of New and Popular Works Principally for Young Persons by Griffith and Farran, which includes Fickle Flora and Her Friends (1863) and Our Birthdays and How to Improve Them (1881).

R. Baldwin, 1754. viii + 282 pages, plus single advert leaf at end, the first leaf a half-title with publisher's advertisement to verso, light marginal browning to first and last few leaves, contemporary calf gilt, rubbed and a little wear to joints and extremities, upper joint partly cracked, 12mo. First edition. Written by the actor and physician John Hill (1714-1755). .
