London.James Nisbet & Co. 1880. vi, [2], [1], 2 -256, 16pp ad's. Illustrated. Original cloth, gilt. Octavo. Hinges cracked; boards very badly damp-stained, and the spine faded. Internally clean and with no sign of damp. Probably the first reprint as the first edition was issued in December 1878 with the title-page date 1879. This copy is signed by Ballantyne in full on the title-page and is extensively corrected and marked up in his hand for the printer, presumably for a new and shorter edition. However, the alterations, which include much excising and some manuscript changes, cease at page 57. This title was intended primarily for the adult market.
