[London.]: [Thomas Nelson and Sons.], [1856.]. The first edition of this work was issued without a title-page. 3 leaves of music; 1 leaf of lyrics; text finishing on page 24. Eight full-page coloured illustrations in total. Original red ripple-grain pictorial cloth gilt. 4to. There are two issues of the first edition, neither of which were issued with a title-page. This copy is a first issue. See Quayle [6a]. Loosely laid in is an original watercolour by Ballantyne for one of the illustrations. Contemporary inscription [May 1857] on front free endpaper; few light marks; else an excellent copy of the rare first edition, first issue. The watercolour shows signs on the verso of being removed from an album. It was purchased together with other Ballantyne originals at a Bonhams auction in 2001. .

Charlotte Maria Tucker wrote under the pseudonym of A.L.O.E which stood for, ‘A Lady of England.’
