THE INFANT’S LIBRARY. Book 1.

London: Printed and sold by John Marshall 140 Fleet Street, No date [circa 1820-24]. Title and 6-60, [1 ad’] pages [Being complete regardless of the paging at the start.] An alphabet Illustrated with 26 full-page engravings illustrating the alphabet. Original paper-covered pink boards with shaped title labels to both boards. 61 x 48 mm. Spine expertly restored; some pages cropped very close to the image; else a very good, clean, crisp copy. The Infant’s Library, first published in 1800, consisted of a wooden box with a sliding front, designed to resemble a bookcase with glazed doors. The inside, lined with pink paper, was divided into four; each compartment containing four miniature books, making a total of sixteen. The ‘Library was still being issued as late as 1824, though these printings are, in our experience, far less common. See Brian Alderson, The Private Library Third Series Volume 6: I. Spring 1983.
