Original cloth, recased with the original spine laid down. First edition. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on title: ‘With R. M. Martin’s complts.’ The tile also bears the initials in pencil ‘R. M. B.’ [Possibly added later by his daughter?] Two bookplates of Eric Quayle to front pastedown; pencilled note by him on verso of front free endpaper: ‘Presentation copy to R. M. Ballantyne (1825 -’94) the boys’ story writer, who himself spent several years in Hudson’s Bay. I obtained the volume from Ballantyne’s daughter. E. Q.’ Three of the leaves in the Preface are partly torn along the gutter; ownership name [not Ballantyne’s on the free end-paper; generally a little tired, but a good copy, and if Mr Quayle’s attribution is correct, an important association copy.
