    Circa 1820: 1820. A miniature peepshow measuring 50 x60 mm (landscape), and some 170 mm deep when fully extended. Comprising of six hand-coloured engraved panels, the first five having cut-outs, so that the scene can be viewed three-dimensionally when placed to the eye. The scene depicted is that of a rural idyll. The location is probably France or Germany. The original slipcase is missing so there is no imprint or date, but circa 1820, and of French or possibly German origin. The bellows have been restored; the cloth slipcase is recent. Miniature peepshows are extremely rare.

    Probably Vienna: Probably H. F. Muller, No date [circa 1825]. An accordian style peepshow with six hand-coloured etched cut-out panels, plus a removable hand-coloured back-slide, showing the Sanssouci Palace and its terraced garden, in Potsdam. The cut-out front face measures 12.2 x 15 cm. The peepshow expands to approximately 74 cm. It is contained in the original hand-coloured pictorial slipcase. Case torn a little at front thumb-insert; case a little rubbed; else an excellent copy of a peepshow intended specifically for children, complete with the often missing removable back-slide.     A peepshow bearing no imprint or date, but German, circa 1840. The hand-coloured front panel has a single oval viewing hole, revealing four shaped pictorial sections separated by bellows, which extend the view to the pictorial back board. The six views are numbered 1 through to 6. All sections are hand-coloured lithographs. Original slipcase with the title in German, French, and English. Case restored at edges; else a fine copy. See Hyde, ‘Paper Peepshows.’Cat. 148. This peepshow is commonly found with only three cut-out sections [Cat. 147].

The front-face, measuring 17.5 x 22 cm, forms the lid to the shallow cartonnage box containing the peepshow. The peepshow expands by paper bellows to approximately 76 cm. The lithographed scenes are hand-coloured. Four vignettes on the front-face show the Great Exhibition Building, the Hungerford Suspension Bridge, the Houses of Parliament, and the Tower of London. The two peep-holes show the Wapping entrance to the Tunnel with views along the Western and Eastern Archways. Within the Tunnel can be seen many foreign visitors, some walking, some shopping at various counters that have been set up for trading.
