Original plain untitled sheep. 12mo in sixes. 14.6 x 8.8 cm. Spine cracked, and with some loss of leather; some corners turned; blank corner lost from frontispiece; else a very good copy contained in a folding cloth box with leather, gilt label to the spine. Would seem to be different issue of Gumuchian 62.

Spine restored; some light spotting; one plate with two small stains, another with some stains left from something once laid in; possibly lacks ad's at end; else a very good copy of this fine alphabet. The last leaf bears a small coloured label for Delaporte's Parisian Repository, Burlington Arcade, London. Gumuchian 21-22.

The first edition of 5000 copies was issued in July 1902, the second in September, and a third in December.

Hand-coloured wood-engraved frontispiece showing children in school; and twenty-six hand-coloured oval wood-engravings illustrating the letters of the alphabet, with a line of text beneath. Original wrappers with hand-coloured cuts to both covers. Original wrappers with cuts to both covers. All edges gilt. 10.3 x6.4 cm’s. This copy has some water-staining throughout. The lower cover shows a pedlar and is titled ‘A Jew.’ It is not unusual to find Houlston chapbooks hand-coloured and with gilt edging. As the basic uncoloured copy retailed at twopence, the coloured copy was probably double.

Printed and sold by J Thompson. No21, Eastsmithfield [sic], No date. [Circa 1800.]. 16pp. Illustrated with three small woodcuts. Self wrappers. Approx: 9 x 5.6 cm’s. Though the cuts are slightly different, the textual content is identical to that of the John Evans edition above, save that ‘little readers… run to Mr Thompson’s No, 21, East-Smithfield’, rather than ‘Mr. Evans’s, No. 42, Long-Lane, West-Smithfield.’ Cut a little crookedly at fore-edge, else a very good copy. Publications by J. Thompson are very scarce.
