No date [circa 1860]. A single sheet 406 x 280mm., bearing 25 hand-coloured lithographed caricatured figures to illustrate the letter of the alphabet. Little wear at edges, else a very attractive alphabet sheet.

Limoges: Ardant Imp Libraire, No date [circa 1820]. 72 pages. Engraved frontispiece, engraved title-page, and 4 full-page plates each bearing six images of trades. Original plain untitled sheep. 12mo in sixes. 14.6 x 8.8 cm. Spine cracked, and with some loss of leather; some corners turned; blank corner lost from frontispiece; else a very good copy contained in a folding cloth box with leather, gilt label to the spine. Would seem to be different issue of Gumuchian 62.

Church Hanborough: Previous Parrot Press, 1998. This book is published more as a warning than as a guide. Laser printed in an edition of 98 copies of which the first 18 will be hand coloured under the supervision of the artist. This copy is number 45. A fine copy in the original pictorial wrappers.

Paris: Chez Aubert, Editeur, Galerie Véro-Dodat, No date. (Circa 1845.). Twenty-six lithographic plates, twenty-five of which bear multiple illustrations, the last leaf being the solution to the charades. Original pink lithographically illustrated boards. Oblong 4to. Spine restored; some light spotting; one plate with two small stains, another with some stains left from something once laid in; possibly lacks ad's at end; else a very good copy of this fine alphabet. The last leaf bears a small coloured label for Delaporte's Parisian Repository, Burlington Arcade, London. Gumuchian 21-22.

Original embossed pink boards; slipcase. 9.1 x 6.2 cm. Base of slipcase missing. The text paper, which is very poor quality, is badly foxed; some off-setting to the plates, else a good copy of a scarce alphabet for children.

London.T. B. Browne, Limited. [1901]. [iv], v, [75], 76-1070pp. 11 colour fold-out maps and many black & white illustrations throughout; pictorial adverts on endpapers and right through to page 135, and at the rear from page 1035. Original cloth gilt. Large octavo. Binding a little faded; head and heel bumped with small nick to head; boards a little rubbed; else a very good copy.

London: Dean & Son, No date. [1902.]. [32] pages including covers. 345 x 215mm. Edges a little frayed and curled; else a very good copy of this the first rag book to be issued from the publishing house of Dean & Son. Very scarce. This is the first of many rag book titles that Dean would publish throughout the twentieth century. See Cope pages 12 & 60. The first edition of 5000 copies was issued in July 1902, the second in September, and a third in December.

Glasgow: J. Lumsden & Sons, No date. (Circa 1815/20.). 32 pp. (including pastedown wrappers.) Illustrated with woodcuts as frontispiece, vignette on title, page 5, and 26 cuts for the letters of the alphabet. Original plain wrappers. A very good copy. Roscoe & Brimmell 101. This copy differing from that catalogued in the bibliography in that it omits the price of ‘twopence’ at the foot of the title.

London: Frederick Warne & Co, No date [Circa 1880.]. Softcover. 12 leaves printed on one side only; six being letterpress, and six bearing coloured wood-engravings depicting the letters of the alphabet. Original pastedown wrappers. Front wrapper has a pastedown title. Some light spotting, else a very good copy.

York: R. Burdekin. Price One Halfpenny, No date [circa 1820’s]. 12pp. including self-wrappers. Spine expertly repaired; else a very good copy. ‘D was a drunkard, and red face.’ Richard Burdekin’s chapbooks are rarely found. We can locate only one copy of this edition, held by the Bodleian Library.

London & New York: Frederick Warne & Co, No date [circa 1905]. [16] pages, including covers; the pages strengthened by being laid on cloth. Illustrated throughout with four full-colour pages, the remainder in red & black & white. Front cover in full cover; rear bears an advert' for 'Aunt Louisa's Playtime Toy Books. Some chipping to spine, and to the front cover with a small area of loss at the base of the front board; else a very good copy. From the Warne Archive, and bearing their stamp on the second page.

Wellington: F. Houlston, No date. [Circa 1825.]. 32pp., including wrappers. Hand-coloured wood-engraved frontispiece showing children in school; and twenty-six hand-coloured oval wood-engravings illustrating the letters of the alphabet, with a line of text beneath. Original wrappers with hand-coloured cuts to both covers. Original wrappers with cuts to both covers. All edges gilt. 10.3 x6.4 cm’s. This copy has some water-staining throughout. The lower cover shows a pedlar and is titled ‘A Jew.’ It is not unusual to find Houlston chapbooks hand-coloured and with gilt edging. As the basic uncoloured copy retailed at twopence, the coloured copy was probably double.

Printed and sold by J Thompson. No21, Eastsmithfield [sic], No date. [Circa 1800.]. 16pp. Illustrated with three small woodcuts. Self wrappers. Approx: 9 x 5.6 cm’s. Though the cuts are slightly different, the textual content is identical to that of the John Evans edition above, save that ‘little readers… run to Mr Thompson’s No, 21, East-Smithfield’, rather than ‘Mr. Evans’s, No. 42, Long-Lane, West-Smithfield.’ Cut a little crookedly at fore-edge, else a very good copy. Publications by J. Thompson are very scarce.
