REBUS or HIEROGLYPHIC CARD.

1790. An engraved card with words interspersed with hand-coloured images which must be deciphered to make sense of the text. Part of a set, probably of 12 cards, originally issued in a titled sleeve, this card is number 1. No imprint or date but London, and probably issued by John Wallis, circa 1790. Each card is oblong and measures, 75 x 114 mm. Light dust-soiling, else fine.
