THE HISTORY OF THE TOWN AND PORT OF DOVER, AND OF DOVER CASTLE; WITH A SHORT ACCOUNT OF THE CINQUE PORTS. In two volumes.
Dover: Printed, for the author, by Ledger and Shaw; and sold by them, and all Booksellers in the County of Kent; and by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Browne, 39, Paternoster Row, London, 1813. Volume II, 1814. First editions. Vol. I: [12], xlvii, 366 pages. Vol. II: [viii], 390 pages. Two volumes bound as one. This copy has had each leaf of text window mounted within folio size leaves. In addition to the fifteen plates that are called for, it has been extra illustrated with another 15 plates, including two hand-coloured views of Dover by W. Daniel: Shakespeare’s Cliff, and Dover from Shakespeare’s Cliff. Bound in half calf gilt over marbled boards. Folio: 410 x 270 mm. Some foxing at start of volume one; endpapers a little creased; binding a little rubbed; else a very good and unique copy. [The cost of window-mounting over four hundred leaves would be astronomical today.]
