The last story concerns a Jamaican girl called Virginia who cannot return home for the Christmas holidays like her fellow pupils. In particular, she is envious of a girl called Fanny Green. However, just as the girls are about to leave, a letter arrives, informing the headmistress, that Fanny’s mother has suddenly died and that she must remain at school. Virginia reflects on her jealousy and is comforted by the thought that her mother is alive and well.
