THE VERITABLE HISTORY OF MR. BACHELOR BUTTERFLY. Showing how it was diversified by many changes: for after being married in the belly of a whale, he narrowly escaped bigamy and became the step-father of eight hopeful children.
London: David Bogue, 1845. 66 pages. Illustrated throughout in comic-strip format. Original decorative cloth gilt. Oblong octavo; 150 X 280 mm. First edition. Ownership name of Leonard Menzies Holland on endpaper; binding a little worn and rubbed; but a very good copy of quite a scarce book. According to the British Library these were a series of plates, taken from the ‘Histoire de M. Cryptogame’ in the French newspaper ‘L’Illustration.’ Töpffner’s ‘Histoire de Mr. Jabot,’ published in 1833, is generally acknowledged to be the precursor of the modern comic.
