London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1811-1816. Vol’s I – 6. 1811 – 1816. Volume I: iv, 409 pages. Illustrated with a folding map ‘of the travels of Mr. De Villeneuve from the River Sallum to the Senegal, and one engraving within the text. Vol’ II: iv, 410, [2 ad’s] pages. Vol’ III: iv, 398 pages. Vol’ IV: iv, 386 pages. Vol’ V: iv, 374 pages. Illustrated with folding engraved plan of the Allotments in the colony of Sierra Leone, and an engraved Plan of Freetown. Vol’ VI: iv, [2 blanks], 366 pages. All six volumes bound in relatively recent paper-covered boards with paper labels to the spines. Some occasional light spotting and browning; the very occasional lost small corner; else a very good set of the first six volumes of the rare periodical which ran to a seventh volume in 1819 before it ceased publication. Volume III contains a rare first printing of an essay by Charles Lamb, entitled, Confessions of a Drunkard. Loosely laid in to the volume in the carbon copy of a typewritten note discussing its rarity. The Philanthropist contains numerous articles on the slave trade, Africa, the poor, the Indian tribes of North America, crime, education, prison, literature, travel, philanthropy, etc., etc.
