DAS A B C CUM NOTIS VARIORUM. Herausgegeben von einem, dessen Nahmen im A B C stehet. 2 parts in 1 vol.

Leipzig & Dresden: Johann Christoph Miethen, 1703. [iv], 210, 287, [1] pages. Titles in red and black, woodcut frontispiece in part 1 showing a cockerel - repeated on verso of the last leaf, 1 folding table, diagrams and numerous tables in the text. Modern half calf, titled in blind over marbled boards. 8vo. Binding: 167 x 107 mm. Small repair to 1 leaf in part 2, with loss of page number and 1 letter only. However, a good copy overall. This is the first complete edition of this curious book - part 1 only was first published in 1695. The title states that the name of the author is contained in the A B C, and most probably it is there in all the anagrams and puzzles in the book, but his name has not been discovered. A rare work on the significance of the letters of the alphabet - mystical, musical, historical and alchemical. The book is full of puzzles, anagrams, ciphers, codes etc., and it has been the subject of scholarly study particularly relating to Bach's music and whether he was influenced by this book.
