Engraved title with elaborate border; 100 other circular engravings throughout by Hans Sibmacher. Full calf gilt. Quarto. First edition. Part one of what would become a four part work. Boards rubbed and scuffed; corners a trifle bumped and worn; hinges cracked; loss of approx. 1cm of calf to head and heel of spine; some fading to gilt on spine; some light water-staining towards rear; some minor worming to blank margins at front and rear. Neat ownership inscription, dated 1652, at base of title; another at the head. Else a very good copy.Very scarce. The first botanical emblem book and one of the first to have illustrations engraved from copper plates. The title is dated 1590, the preface 1593. Three more works of emblems were published separately between 1595 and 1604. In 1605 they were issued collectively in a single volume.
