London: F. C. and J. Rivington; J. Johnson; and Newberry (sic), 1814. [i-iii] iv, [124] pages. Illustrated throughout with numerous woodcuts. Bound in early 20th century half morocco gilt. 12mo. Binding rubbed; else an excellent copy. Rare, OCLC records only five copies, and Roscoe J352, adds only 2 more copies, of which this is one. Formally from the Grant collection, with their collection number on endpaper. Roscoe speculates that the ‘Newberry’ listed as a publisher is in fact Francis Newbery rather than John Newbery's widow Elizabeth. The School-Virgil is the last children’s book to appear with a Newbery imprint. The illustrations are designed as mnemonic devices, and were intended to supplement the 1812 first edition of Thornton.
