London: Printed By S. Richardson. For T. & T. Longman, C. Hitch & L. Hawes, I. Hodges I. & I. Rivington. G. Keith & R. Dodsley, [1753]. [2], xxxiv, [2], 192 pages. Engraved vignette of title, and 25 engraved plates, each bearing ten small engravings. Fine twentieth century half red morocco, gilt over marbled boards. 12mo. The last leaf has been strengthened on the outer margin of the verso; the first plate has been restored at the bottom outer corner, where a small piece has been torn away, just affecting the illustration; some light water-staining to the lower portion of the last signature; else an excellent copy of an early edition. The book was first issued by Richardson in 1740, shortly before the publication of his first novel Pamela. The above copy is the third edition, second issue; the Preface, the Life, and the Reflections are all the work of Samuel Richardson. This issue is probably the last edition printed by Richardson as he died in 1761. Early copies in such excellent condition are rare.
