Description The imprint has been crossed through in ink, and between the two lines of print the author has written in ink. 'S. Grimaldi, Copthall Court.' [ 32] pages, [9] leaves of hand-coloured moveable plates protected with tissue guard sheets. Emblematic illustrations of toilet articles, with moral precepts; each hand-coloured plate has a hinged flap, which when lifted reveals the name of a virtue. Original printed boards. 138 x 112 mm. First edition, first issue. Spine restored; else a very good, clean copy of the rare first edition. First devised by the miniature painter William Grimaldi as a house party amusement in 1821, his son Stacey Grimaldi seized on his father's drawings of his sister's dressing table and suggested that with the addition of moralizing verses the drawings would make a good book. Accordingly The Toilet was issued at the author's own expense in 1821. The book proved to be a huge success, a second edition being sold by W. Sams, and a third, in 1823, being by Ackermann , Harris and Son, ... Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, ... and Simpkin and Marshall. In 1824 Grimaldi published, A Suit of Armour for Youth, another book with moveable flaps.
