Title TOM THUMB'S PLAY-THING; with The Life of the Author: containing, Among other Adventures, his surprising Escape out of the Cow's Belly, to which is added, The History of Master and Miss Verygood. [Price One-Penny, Bound and Gilt.]
Published London. Printed and Sold by John Marshall and Co. at No. 4 Aldermary Church Yard, Bow-Lane. No date, but before 1790.
Stock Code 13681
Description 28, [3 ad's], [1 blank] pages, including the recto and verso of the first and last leaves which are blank pastedowns to the Dutch floral paper wrappers. Illustrated with a woodcut pastedown frontispiece, and 24 woodcuts illustrating an alphabet, plus a further 12 woodcuts. Original Dutch floral wrappers. 10 x 6.5 cm. Quite soiled throughout; turned corners; three small corners lost to front wrapper and page one, but with no loss of text; one leaf of ad's repaired with thread; spine worn with some loss of paper. Rare. The only copy listed on WorldCat of this pre 1790 edition is in the Cotsen children's library, but that is incomplete, lacking the wrappers, the frontispiece, and the last leaf of ad's. There is one copy of a later printing, circa 1794, in Toronto Public Library, but that would appear to be in poor condition as the wrappers are described as 'mutilated.' The 'Q' of the alphabet reads,: 'Q was a Queen, And Queen of the Sluts.' This is possibly a reference to Anne Boleyn, who was frequently referred as 'The Great Whore.'
