Published London. Samuel Leigh. No date [circa 1830].
Stock Code 13275
Description Comprising 32 hand-coloured cards engraved by Sydney Hall, featuring 79 constellations. The cards are pierced with various diameter holes which, when held to the light, highlight the stars and signify their individual magnitude. Card size: 20 x 13.8 cm [some portrait, some landscape]. Contained in the original box with decorative paper-covered sides and with a pictorial title label to the lid. The set was first published in 1824, and was issued either plain or coloured. Though the cards were exact copies taken from Alexander Jamieson's Celestial Atlas published two years earlier, they were originally engraved without the stars surrounding the constellations, which left them a looking rather bare. This was corrected in the second edition, of which this is an example. This copy has some slight wear to the box; lacking ribbon; there is a very small label on the title pastedown; else this example is particularly fine. Together with: ASPIN, Jehoshapat. A FAMILIAR TREASTISE OF ASTRONOMY, Explaining the General Phenomena of the Celestial Bodies with Numerous Graphic Illustrations… Written expressly to accompany Urania's Mirror, or, A View of the Heavens; consisting of thirty-two cards on which are represented all the constellations visible in Great Britain; on a plan perfectly original, designed by a Lady. Second edition with considerable Augmentations and improvements. London. Samuel Leigh. 1825. xii, 199, [xxiv ad's] pages. Illustrated with four folding charts, one of which is hand-coloured. Original Paper-covered boards with mounted printed label, recently re-backed in paper. The second edition of this work is far superior to the first edition, which did not contain descriptions of the cards.
