Description 32pp., including wrappers. Hand-coloured wood-engraved frontispiece showing children in school; and twenty-six hand-coloured oval wood-engravings illustrating the letters of the alphabet, with a line of text beneath. Original wrappers with hand-coloured cuts to both covers. Original wrappers with cuts to both covers. All edges gilt. 10.3 x6.4 cm's. This copy has some water-staining throughout. The lower cover shows a pedlar and is titled 'A Jew.' It is not unusual to find Houlston chapbooks hand-coloured and with gilt edging. As the basic uncoloured copy retailed at twopence, the coloured copy was probably double.
