THE POLITE TRAVELLER, or A Collection of Travels made in different parts of the world. 1799.
Title THE POLITE TRAVELLER, or A Collection of Travels made in different parts of the world.
Published London. William Lane. 1799.
Stock Code 11905
Description 144 pages. Engraved frontispiece. Original quarter green calf over marbled boards with paper label to spine. 12mo. Lacks endpaper (if called for); binding rather worn; wax marks to recto of frontispiece, one having created a small hole in the blank margin; else a good plus copy. The Frontispiece states Vol.II in the margin, and the text block Vol. IV. We suspect, that that this edition, which is not in Blakey, has used the frontispiece from Volume II of The Polite Traveller issued by John Fielding in 1783 in eight volumes [that volume covering Italy, Spain, Portugal and Africa]; volume IV, being a modern view of the thirteen united states of America. This issue by William Lane would seem to be an amalgam of those two volumes. Rare. ESTC lists no copies in the U.K., and two copies only in the United States: Cornell and The Huntington Library,.
