Condition: a few leaves with clean tears; a few leaves loosening; lacking a signature from volume six [never bound in]; some wear and loss to heads and heels of spines; some volumes lacking an endpaper; else a remarkably clean and fresh set in a contemporary binding, contained in a modern cloth box with leather gilt label. So far as we have been able to determine, this is the earliest printing of a work entitled Le Cabinet des Fées known. Despite Perrault being a contemporary of Comtesse d'Aulnoy and publishing his signature work, Histoires, ou contes du temps passé, avec des Moralitez in the same year [1697] as she published her Contes des Fées, this collection omits his fairy tales, an omission that wasn't rectified until the publication in 1785-89 of a forty-one volume set of Les Cabinet Des Fées. An almost identical set to that we are offering, though lacking some frontispieces and titles, is in the Cotsen Children's Library at Princeton. Of the utmost rarity and importance.
